Wanted to start a series of posts on how my Jr. High aged son is now checked out from school, and I’m helping him start a business.

His school has “A” and “B” days. He does one full day, then the other he does a half and comes home where him and I work on his business ideas together.

We’re now into his second day with me.

The first day I had him write down YouTube channel ideas.

The way I’m approaching teaching him about entrepreneurship is to inspire him first. YouTube is an easy starting point, then I’ll motivate him in non-YouTube areas as we go deeper.

However, if the other business ideas take off then I WILL focus on YouTube not for him to “be an influencer,” but to leverage it for marketing and building a brand.

For the YouTube session we did together, I asked him to come up with channel ideas. I knew his first idea would be a gaming channel, so I told him he had to come up with three channel ideas so he’d think outside of the box.

After he came up with three ideas, I then told him to come up with seven video ideas for each of the channels. That way his brain could start understanding future-pacing.

For our second entrepreneurial one-on-one day we did the same 3 ideas x 7 options concept, but with business ideas.

Had him come up with three different company ideas. Then we came up with seven products for each of the three companies.

I made sure to tell him everything that I could think about to excite him. Though this is “school” with dad, I don’t want him to look at it that way. I want him to see this as opportunity.

  • Freedom of time
  • Freedom of travel
  • Freedom of options
  • Pride in his own potential accomplishments, and how his friends would look up to him having his own business so early.

This isn’t just an opportunity to make money. This is an opportunity to do cool things, and have freedom.

We’ll eventually talk about technical business things, finances, inventory, customer acquisition, but for now it’s about inspiration. We’re focusing on excitement and creativity.

The possibilities are endless, and we will start exploring each of those possibilities as they reveal themselves.

Starting this as a bit of a diary to share with you. I’ll keep you updated.
