A new person just started on our team, first week their mom had a heart attack.  Maybe three days on the job and they asked for a salary advance.

I get asked to “borrow money” all the time. ALL. THE. TIME.  Candidly, it’s maddening and I made a rule years ago to no longer lend money. Ever.

It’s not even the money. It’s the trust that’s lost. The lack of respect that comes from that engagement when you help someone and they don’t honor their word in return or just make it super awkward being around you from that point on. I don’t lend money not because I don’t care, but because I DO care. I do it to protect friendships.

But there’s a big difference between supporting a handout and helping a human in need when you’re in a position that you can help.

Advanced them two months pay and told them to take their time when they decide to actually start working.

Latest update on mom is that she’s awake and a fighter.
